In The Name of Alvin and My Commitment As A Care Manager
In the Name of Alvin and My Commitment as a Care Manager
As I look back over my thirty-year journey in the human services field, one person forever changed the trajectory of my life and career — Alvin.
Alvin ignited a fire in me — a determination to break down walls and fight for individuals with special needs who too often fall through the cracks.
Early in my career, I worked as a case manager supporting
individuals who were homeless, medically compromised, and living with addiction. It was meaningful work that gave me purpose and strengthened my sense of servant leadership.
Then I met Alvin.
He faced all those same challenges — but he also lived with an intellectual disability, a factor that placed him in an entirely different category of vulnerability. Despite his struggles, the system failed him repeatedly.
When Alvin began to face consequences for breaking shelter rules, I fought for him. I pleaded for understanding and sought a plan that would give him the services he deserved. My advocacy fell on deaf ears. I was even told not to pursue additional supports — that if he broke one more rule, he would be discharged.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Alvin was discharged to a boarding home with no real services in place — only basic medical care. I was heartbroken and deeply disillusioned.
Within six months of his discharge — on Christmas Day — I received a call that Alvin had passed away.
I’ll never forget that moment. My former supervisor called to share the news and even asked if I would consider returning to work. I declined. My heart was shattered, but my mission was born.
In the months that followed, I immersed myself in learning, advocacy, and building connections across Pennsylvania. Over time, I created my own independent care management company, dedicated to ensuring that no one like Alvin is ever forgotten or left without a voice.
Today, I am committed to helping individuals with disabilities and seniors live with dignity, safety, and choice — empowered to thrive in their homes and communities.
In the name of Alvin — and every person who has been overlooked — I continue this work with
dignity, safety, and choice — empowered to thrive in their homes and communities.
In the name of Alvin — and every person who has been overlooked — I continue this work with purpose, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
