Understanding the role of an Ombudsman
Understanding the Role of a Long-Term Care Ombudsman
Every Area Agency on Aging has not only advocates—but also a dedicated Long-Term Care Ombudsman. These professionals serve as champions for the rights, safety, and well-being of individuals living in nursing homes, assisted living communities, and other long-term care settings.
As a Care Manager Consultant, I often collaborate with Ombudsmen to ensure residents receive the respect, support, and quality care they deserve. Their work is essential in helping families navigate complex care systems and ensuring that seniors and individuals with disabilities live with dignity and purpose.
💜 Key Responsibilities:
1. Resolve concerns about safety, health, and resident rights — serving as a liaison between facilities, residents, and families.
2. Educate residents and families about their rights and available resources.
3. Provide advocacy to ensure residents’ voices are heard and needs are met.
4. Support quality of life and person-centered care within long-term living environments.
5. Assess individual needs for those entering or currently in long-term care.
The work of an Ombudsman reminds us all to advocate, listen, and protect those who may not have a voice.
Remember: advocacy is a form of self-care too. When we speak up for others, we strengthen our compassion, resilience, and sense of purpose.
