The Day I Chose Me

The Day I Chose Me

On October 15, 2019, after a management meeting, I realized enough was enough.

For years, I had poured everything into my work. I was answering calls while on vacation, constantly going the extra mile, and trying to carry responsibilities that were never meant for one person. Meanwhile, I watched unhealthy behaviors being rewarded in a toxic work environment.

The truth is, I wasn't taking care of myself.

I was experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue, yet I kept believing that if I just worked harder, things would get better.

They didn't.

That day, I made one of the hardest decisions of my professional life. I gave seven weeks' notice and walked away—not because I didn't care, but because I finally realized I had to care for myself. I was so burned out that I didn't want a party, nor did I receive anything for my hard work. That is when I realized I did the right thing, despite the uncertainty of another job on the horizon.

I promised myself that once I got back on my feet, self-care would no longer be an afterthought. It would become a priority.

That decision changed the direction of my life.

Today, self-care is more than rest. It's setting boundaries, protecting my peace, creating financial wellness, investing in my growth, and living with intention.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is choose yourself—not out of selfishness, but out of wisdom.

Have you ever reached a moment when you knew it was time to choose yourself?
