Learning to Anticipate My Own Needs

Learning to Anticipate My Own Needs

I spent many valuable years anticipating the needs of others—making sure everyone else was okay, showing up when I was needed, and often putting myself at the bottom of the list.

However, as I get older, I am learning something different: I need to anticipate my own needs, too.

Self-care requires regularly asking myself: What do I need physically, emotionally, spiritually, professionally, and financially? I shouldn't have to reach complete exhaustion before deciding that I need rest, support, boundaries, or a change.

I am also learning that healthy relationships should include reciprocity. There is nothing wrong with giving, helping, and supporting others, but constantly pouring from one direction eventually leaves you depleted.

Aging and maturity should change how we do some things. What I tolerated years ago doesn't necessarily deserve a place in the life I am creating today.

Health becomes a priority. Peace becomes a priority. Time becomes more valuable. And self-care becomes less negotiable.

Exhaustion is not a badge of honor.

I can still be caring, generous, and available to others without abandoning myself in the process.

Sometimes maturity is simply realizing: I matter in the equation, too. It is not too late to change !
